Graphic Design

While UNCDF encourages creativity in publication design,
basic graphic standards help maintain a consistent corporate identity.
Logo
Applying the UNCDF logo and tagline. When using the logo and tagline, use an original copy downloaded from this site. The logo should not be altered in any way.

Boilerplate
Description of UNCDF. A standard description of UNCDF should appear at the beginning or end of each publication. You can download in English and French below.

Date
Date and contact details. The back cover should list the date of the actual publication and the contact address for copies and other information.
Rule of Thumb
One element should stand out on the page. It could be the headline or the picture but not both.
Images/Illustrations
Use relevant illustrations or photographs. Use charts that elaborate and support the points you are trying to make in the main text. Resist inserting graphics for the sake of using a visual as it may distract the reader.
Maps
Since borders carry political connotations, maps can be problematic. All maps in publications or exhibits should come from the UN Cartographic Unit, as it is the most reliable and official source. They should carry the disclaimer below.
White Space
Don’t feel compelled to fill every inch of space with copy or images. An open, airy design is inviting and friendly.
Consistency
Repeat design elements and styles to help navigate a longer document.
A well-designed cover
If you are pressed for funds on a longer publication, at least have a well-designed cover. The cover is your first—and perhaps only chance to spark interest in the content inside. Find a design that is new, different, and compelling.
Disclaimer
The designations employed and the presentation of material on this map do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the Secretariat of the United Nations or UNCDF concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area.

Typography

Typography plays an important role in communicating an overall tone and quality. Careful use of typography reinforces our personality and ensures clarity and harmony in all UNCDF communications. For UNCDF printed materials the fonts Museo Sans and Univers should be used as primary and secondary corporate typefaces.

Font

Use the Museo Sans and Univers fonts in Light and Bold. It’s licensed for use on the uncdf.org domains only. For services publicly available on different domains, use an alternative typeface like Arial.

Fonts can be downloaded from the links below:

The Primary Corporate Font

Museo Sans is a full-featured, highly legible sans serif font family designed by Jos Buivenga. Museo Sans sports a familiar look and is based on the popular Museo serif typeface family. Museo Sans has a sturdy, low contrast, geometric design style that works well in both text and display sizes. Museo Sans is a trademark of Exljbris Font Foundry and may be registered in certain jurisdictions.

Headings

  1. Use Museo Sans Bold
  2. Use sentence case for headings
  3. Use headings consistently to create a clear hierarchy

Copy Text and Sub-Logos Font

The Univers® typeface family is one of the most prolific grotesque sans-serif typefaces of the century. Like Helvetica®, Univers is based on 1898‘s Akzidenz-Grotesk. However, Univers is unique in that the design lacks super uous features of any type, creating a design that is versatile and distinctive without being obtrusive. Adrian Frutiger began work on Univers in 1954, completing his design in 1957. The Univers type family has grown to 44 different weights and styles, some of which include Cyrillic characters.

Typography and Text Hierarchy

Typographic hierarchy is another form of visual hierarchy, a sub-hierarchy per se in an overall design project Typographic hierarchy presents lettering so that the most important words are displayed with the most impact so users can scan text for key information.

Typographic hierarchy creates contrast between elements. There are a variety of ways you can create a sense of hierarchy. Here are some of the most common techniques for UNCDF layouts.

The Colour System and Colour Codes

Colour plays an important role in the UNCDF corporate identity program. The colours below are recommendations for various media. A palette of primary colours has been developed, consistent use of these colours will contribute to the cohesive and harmonious look of the UNCDF brand identity across all relevant media. Check with your designer or printer when using the corporate colours that they will always be consistent.

UNCDF has two official colours: blue and dark grey. These colours have become a recognizable identifier for the organization. Use them as the dominant colour palette for all internal and external visual presentations of the organization.
